What To Look Before Buying Best Mesh Wifi For Thick Walls?

Look out for these things before buying a mesh wifi system.

Mesh Wifi System vs Router

A standard router is not that powerful as compared to mesh network. Standard router doesn’t have much range coverage and not work properly especially if your house has concrete walls. A simple router wifi signals might not be able to penetrate such walls properly. As for price point of view, it is much cheaper as compared to mesh wifi.

On the other hand, mesh wifi systems are a little expensive but has pretty amazing wifi range coverage. Mesh wifi consist of one main node (called router) and other small nodes which work as extensions and can be placed optimally in other room or different floor. Due to this nature, mesh wifi system can penetrate thick walls much more efficiently without losing much of wireless signal range. Also, mesh network comes with various other advanced features such seamless roaming, tri band and built-in advanced malware protection.

Wifi 5 vs Wifi 6 Mesh

Wifi 5 is a wireless network standard and mostly recognized with 802.11ac. Mesh system which have max 802.11ac written on it is wifi 5 system such as TP-Link Deco S4 mentioned above. Wifi 5 supports max bandwidth transfer rate of up to 3.5 Gbps and supports MU-MIMO (4×4) antennas.

On the other hand, wifi 6 is next gen wireless standard recognized with 802.11ax. Mesh network which has max 802.11ax written on it are wifi 6 compatible system. Wifi 6 supports max bandwidth of up to 9.6 Gbps, allows up to 50% more clients connected simultaneously than wifi 5. Also, wifi 6 mesh supports MU-MIMO (8×8) antennas, means simultaneous spatial data streams for eight simultaneous users, without buffering delays, on both downlinks and uplinks between APs and wireless devices.

As a result, Wi-Fi 6 wireless networks can handle large data transfers back and forth between wireless devices and APs without data buffer delays. than its predecessor. If you have good budget, it is highly recommended to go with wifi 6 mesh system if you going to use it around thick walls because it is an upgrade in every way and can handle multiple clients without disturbing network performance.

Advanced Features

Always go for mesh wifi system which comes with advanced technologies such as beam-foaming allowing concentrate signals for better penetration through thick walls, reaching signals to device on the other side, seamless roaming where your device never gets disconnected when you moving in your house, built in malware protection for preventing your network from various cyber threats and parental controls to observe your children activity on the internet etc. Such features can come in handy when needed.

  1. John, can you please assist me with the mesh wifi device for a hotel with thick concrete walls?

    • Netgear Orbi will be best for you due to its powerful internal antennas. It also has amazing performance and lets you connect up to 100 devices. Great for hotels where network stability and security is important.

  2. Hi John,
Thanks this is really helpful. Our Velop system has been gradually crashing over last 18 months so I’m looking to replace and choosing between Orbi (maybe the RBK753 as more adfordable?) and the TP Link system. Budget of £350 . 3 storey Victorian house with v thick walls, hence finding your review!
I’m struggling with all the different models.. Which TP system is it you are recommending? The X20 AX1800 or AX 3000?
    Help much appreciated thanks.
    C

    • Hi.
The Ax1800 will be fine as well and can easily handle 50+ devices without degrading performance.
But i noticed your budget is quite large so go for AX3000 for future proofing.
Both models has similar range and can penetrate thick walls, just max allowed bandwidth is different in both.
If your internet plan is lets say 1Gbps, you might not see much of a difference between both models.
But if your plan is greater than 2Gbps, then Ax3000 definitely going to perform better (because ax3000 allows 3Gbps max bandwidth).
RBK753 quite overkill in your situation (assuming you have 1Gbps internet plan and around 30+ devices) and not that affordable as compared to x20.
      Hope this answers the question.
      Thank You.
